He chose a trap play from the power gap scheme that Tennessee ran. He says it’s on the running back in that scenario to make the unblocked player miss.Īnother play that Smith drew up was a play where he’d be a pulling guard. Instead of changing this particular play, Smith said they’d move down a track and leave themselves down a man on the backside of the play. Schwartz quizzed Smith on how he and his teammates would react differently if something unexpected happened during the play, like the free safety coming down into the box. For the Volunteers, where Smith played left guard last season, he’d be making a B-block on the middle linebacker. Smith would be combo-blocking with center Creed Humphrey on this play in Kansas City. This specific play would look a bit different for Smith in the Chiefs’ scheme than it did for him in college. Smith explained that it was almost closer to a halfback cutback than a traditional inside zone run. It was a high-success play in Tennessee’s scheme, mainly because they ran it a little bit different than most would. Smith’s favorite play is a weak inside zone run to the right side. It easy to why the Chiefs got a steal with Trey Smith in the 6th round. The final segment of Big Boys Club is with new offensive lineman get on the white board to discuss some Xs and Os. Re-stocking that group has been stated as a priority ever since the end of the season, and this is an excellent step in that direction. They allowed Eli Manning to be sacked a career-worst 39 times in 2013 and injuries exposed the lack of depth along the line. The Giants, of course, desperately need help on their offensive line. Rotoworld also rated Schwartz the best free-agent guard. Here is an immediate reaction from PFF to the signing: At 28 years old, Schwartz looks to be the prize of this year’s free agent guard class. He had the sixth-lowest percentage of run snaps that took a downgrade among all guards. He has elite power at the point of attack, but he also rarely gets beat cleanly. While he had a superb year in pass protection with a pass blocking efficiency of 97.3 (ranked 11th), Schwartz’ calling card is his run blocking. The Oregon product has an overall grade of +24.1 in 792 snaps (full season is typically 1000+ snaps) since he missed the whole 2011 season with a hip injury. While there are no ’big name’ guards hitting free agency, Schwartz has played as well as any not named Evan Mathis on a per-snap basis the last two years. Schwartz scored a +18.9 from Pro Football Focus in 549 snaps last season, best of any free-agent guard, and PFF is effusive in its praise of the five-year veteran: Schwartz has a reputation as a road-grading run-blocker. Previously, he spent three seasons with the Carolina Panthers and one with the Minnesota Vikings. ![]() Schwartz, 6-foot-6, 340 pounds, is a five-year veteran who spent last season with the Kansas City Chiefs. Otw to the Big Apple tonight! Can't wait to officially sign w/the tomorrow! So pumped. Schwartz confirmed via his Twitter account that he will join the Giants.
