4/5/2023 0 Comments Cosmic sin reviewIt’s clichéd, falling back on the old pulp premise of the culturally diverse “ragtag team” of tough guys and gals, barking out clumsily expositive dialogue in between unimaginative fights. Drake seems to be going for something akin to one of the more cerebral episodes of “Star Trek” or “Battlestar Galactica,” where the morality is murky.Īside from some genuinely impressive special effects sequences - with characters hurtling through the outer atmosphere or clinging to the hulls of spaceships - “Cosmic Sin” is pretty tedious. “Cosmic Sin” is more thematically complicated, raising questions about humankind’s long history of coupling exploration with conquest. It could have been developed into a good movie but it was poorly written and had low grade computer graphics. General Ford joins the team because of his reputation for unsentimental ferocity, born of his mass murder of millions of human colonists who once rebelled against their Alliance.įord isn’t meant to be seen as a hero necessarily. Set in 2524, “Cosmic Sin” follows a group of soldiers on a secret mission to lay waste to an alien planet before its inhabitants can invade the Earth. Maybe he’s giving “Cosmic Sin” director and co-writer Edward Drake’s plodding “war of the worlds” story just as much gusto as it deserves.ĭrake’s film is admirably ambitious, with a reach that exceeds its grasp (or at least its budget). At this point, alarm bells should most certainly be ringing not just for the fate of the unfortunate soldiers, but. Maybe the problem is that Willis spends most of the movie in a bulky armored spacesuit, not exactly conducive to a high-energy performance. Three months later, the trio are back with Cosmic Sin, another sci-fi/horror offering (perhaps made right after Breach) that aims a little higher than the. From the off, Cosmic Sin gives us a few questionable moments in the story, such as the military allowing the attacked (and clearly somehow infected) soldiers to just stroll back into their army base without much of a concern. The bad news is that he’s somehow more lackluster than usual - something that would seem to be impossible given his recent run. Roughly half the action directly involves his character, General James Ford. His most recent pictures could be so much more fun if he would just accept and embrace his films. It’s aggravating because we all know how great he can be. He’s expressionless for ninety-percent of the film. The good news about the explosion-laden science-fiction film “Cosmic Sin” is that Willis is in it quite a bit. You know you’re in trouble when the worst performance in the movie comes from Bruce Willis. Because moviegoing carries risks during this time, we remind readers to follow health and safety guidelines as outlined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and local health officials.īruce Willis has lately been lending his name to modestly budgeted, largely forgettable action pictures, marketed as “Bruce Willis movies” even though he typically appears in a few listless scenes. Ultimately, Cosmic Sin comes down to lots of incomprehensible shoot-outs inside nondescript buildings. The Times is committed to reviewing theatrical film releases during the COVID-19 pandemic. And Willis turns in another in a series of drowsy, lifeless performances. The visual effects, especially an outer-space battle, barely rise to the quality of a 1980s video game. Moreover, the movie tries to shoehorn in some bonus character development (a general and his relationship with his gung-ho son, Willis' relationship with an ex-partner, etc.), but it feels both rushed and phony. Despite some dialogue about moral dilemmas, the movie has none. Then, before we even see any aliens, the humans start shooting at them. It's difficult not to be distracted by the movie's total lack of futuristic wonder. But then the year 2524 appears on-screen - and it looks pretty much the same as today, including the same haircuts and beards, clothing, cars, dive bars, guns that shoot bullets, and even the same expressions ("hurry up and wait"). We get an onslaught of on-screen exposition that explains what's happened to humanity over the last 500 years. The movie's biggest sin occurs right away. Edward Drake, the Director (and co-writer with Corey Large) needs to be banned from a camera for the rest of their lives. As terrible as the acting was, it remains the best part. Cosmic Sin is simultaneously confusing and simplistic, cluttered and empty, and almost entirely clueless. In Cosmic Sin lanceren zeven corrupte soldaten een preventieve aanval op een nieuw ontdekte buitenaardse beschaving in de hoop zo een interstellaire oorlog te beëindigen voordat deze. This alien-attack movie may not be the worst sci-fi film ever made, but it's not too far off.
